Raptor Protection and Safety Services - Street Drug Identification and Management Strategies for Contact Professionals

STREET DRUG IDENTIFICATION AND MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES FOR CONTACT PROFESSIONALS

One of the unfortunate realities of Canadian society is the dramatic increase in the prevalence of drug use.  Within the past two years alone, the increase in violent crime associated with mind-altering substances such as Crack Cocaine, Heroin and Methamphetamine has been staggering.  In fact, Health Canada lists Methamphetamine use alone as a health 'crises'.

The safety concerns relating to encountering subjects under the influence of these and other mind-altering substances are considerable.  Over 90% of all violent crime in Canada is committed by someone under the influence of a mind-altering substance.

In this training session, the learner will be presented with the most relevant and current information available pertaining to the safety issues surrounding the management of subjects under the influence of mind-altering drugs.

After completing this fast-paced, informative training, the learner will be able to:

  • Explain the safety concerns of managing a subject under the influence of mind-altering drugs.
  • Identify the most common types of street drugs encountered by contact professionals.
  • Identify the related paraphernalia that are indicative of drug use, drug houses and drug labs.
  • Describe the safety issues surrounding exposure to drugs.
  • Explain why undedrstanding the various subject behaviours can lead to identification of teh type of drug taken.
  • List a number of risk management strategies on how to interact with subjects under the influence of drugs.

At the end of this session, each learner will be provided a copy of the books, "First Response Guide to Street Drugs" and "First Response Guide to Designer Drugs and Club Drugs", both by Detective Steve Walton (ret.), as a resource tool.
